Performance Critiques and Feedback

Welcome! I’m excited to be working with you!

You’re probably wondering how getting a performance critique can benefit you. If you’re like most musicians, you prepare and prepare for a performance, with only yourself, your teacher, and maybe your family hearing you, over and over again.

Then when you get to the performance, audition, etc., you get comments about things you never noticed or things you didn’t realize other people could hear. Or worse, things they didn’t hear that you thought you were doing especially effectively.

Here’s your chance to get objective, unbiased feedback about your performance so you will know what’s working and what can be improved on.

Here’s how we get started:

  • Send me a recording of something for you which you want detailed critique or feedback. You can send it either as an email attachment or as a link to DropBox or similar file-sharing account. If you can include a PDF of the numbered score, that would be very helpful.
  • Recordings can be with or without video. Keep in mind that there are some issues that may be more easily diagnosed if I can see what’s going on as you play.
  • If you’re preparing for a performance, please tell me what kind of performance it is, such as an audition, a competition, contest, etc. This may influence the type of feedback I give you.
  • Let me know if there are specific issues you want me to listen for, such as something in particular you’ve been working on and want to see if it’s coming across in performance.

I’ll listen to your recording, then write out comments and suggestions and send them to you. This may take 2-3 days, as I’ll want to be thorough and provide you with the best feedback I can give. I’ll do my best to give you useful, effective feedback in a supportive and encouraging manner. I’m not here to tear you down, only reinforce what’s great and help you raise the overall level of your performance.

The fee for Performance critiques is of $45. That includes me listening to your recording as many times as needed, writing out comments with suggestions where appropriate and sending them to you.

This could be just what you need to feel fully prepared for a performance. Find out how you’re playing is coming across to an objective, unbiased listener.
