Ory Schneor at Flute in Wien

Ory Schneor is a flutist and teacher you need to know about if you want to improve your playing. I’ve only recently started following him and receiving  his newsletter, but I’ve been blown away by what I’ve seen and heard.

His approach to playing is practical, analytical, and pedagogical. No magic tricks, just real and thoughtful work. He wants to help you “become the flutist you want to hear.” How great is that?

His approach is simple and straightforward:

  • identify a problem
  • identify the cause
  • devise exercises that address the cause
  • work it out!

Not surprisingly, this is pretty much the approach I use, so naturally it resonates with me, but it is always useful to see how someone else goes about doing similar things. In this case, I think he comes up with more permutations than I could, so his solution will have a broader (possibly stronger!) base

His latest newsletter focuses on how to go about creating exercises that address a problem. He uses the flute solo from William Tell Overture as an example, also providing a downloadable PDF of the exercise he devises. To find out how he does this, go to fluteinwien.com

You’ll also find information on lessons and “intensive” masterclasses, a new addition to my goals list!
